The Department of Economics is one of the founding departments of Madhabdev College (Now Madhabdev University), established on 1st July 1964. The first faculty members of the department were Mohesh Das, Durgeswar Das, Dibyawati Devi, K. G. Das, Bhaben Saikia, Prabin Sarmah. Later Mr. Thanuram Dutta and Dr. Sarat Hazarika joined the department. Subsequently, other esteemed members, including Dr. Mahendra Hazarika, Mr. Ramesh Hazarika, and Dr. Khirod Kumar Phukan, have also rendered valuable service to the department. Over the years, the department has fostered an academic environment dedicated to excellence, consistently producing quality human resources and playing a significant role in society.
On June 14, 2019, the college was formally upgraded to Madhabdev University by the govt. of Assam under the Assam Act No. XXXV of 2017, marking a transformative shift in the department’s scope and research capabilities. Currently the department have 7 faculty members out of which 4 Associate Professors and 3 Assistant Professors. Since the university's upgrade in 2019, the Department of Economics has expanded its curriculum to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Postgraduate (PG): M.A. in Economics. (Intake Capacity: 40)
Doctoral: Ph.D. in Economics. (Intake Capacity: Depends on availability of seats)
